New York, This Years Annual Birthday Trip

Every year Steve and I take a birthday trip with our friends Pam and Charlie.  Our birthdays are Jan (Pam), Feb (Charlie), March (Steve), and April (Me). Our ages rank in the same order.  I am the baby of the group and I so love to say that.  Last year Charlie and Pam picked and we did the Napa trip, I blogged about.  This was a BIG trip for us because it was their 60th birthdays and 40 years of wedded BLISS.  Steve turned the big 60 this year and he wanted to go to New York.  He is writing part of this blog, he was not sure I would do a good job. We arrived at the Trump Soho on Wed afternoon. We were greeted at the door by a man named "ANGEL". There was nowhere to go but "UP". This was going to be a great trip. The rooms were very nice, larger than most NY rooms, great staff and a great location.  I love Soho (South of Houston pronounced 'House-ton'),  it's energy, artsy feel, location, and just everything about it. Cocktails at Pegu, an old speak easy on Houston, that prides itself on hand crafted drinks. We shared a couple of appetizers, small but tasty.  Scallop sliders with onion and a herbed aioli, one of my new favs. Our drinks had everything from the kitchen sink to Eye of Newt in them. They were tasty but I am still a Cosmo Girl. Dinner at Bobby Flay's new restaurant, Gato. Large bar, fun vibe, good service. The menu was just ok.  We all enjoyed our choices but nothing was unforgettable.  I love Bobby Flay's food so I was disappointed.  Steve does not remember the food, drink, or service, he had "So Much Fun". I was very surprised when he woke up felling good. Thursday was the 9/11 Tour and Museum. In our tour a native New Yorker takes you around the area. Starting at St. Paul's Church and ending at the Museum. She was 12 at the time and relayed her story at the time of the attack.  The day of the attack an assembly was called and at the end everyone who had parents who worked at the towers was to remain. As the day went on students were picked up from school. The doorman at her apt. told her dad he needed to go get her. Her mother was on a plane and no one would tell them where it was. It was routed into Canada and she was there for 7 days at the airport. Until they got permission to fly by to the US.

The rest of the tour was about the architecture of the 5 buildings and how important it was to achieve a politically correct memorial, the 2 reflecting pools with 3000 victims names etched in granite around the pool, very serene and fitting reverence to the family and victims. A pink rose is place over their name on the birthday of each victim.

The museum was last and just ok.  I think having watched it on TV. Living through the swell of patriotism was hard to live up to. Just for awhile, there were no hyphenated Americans... Just Americans.

Lunch was a cab ride away, Katz"s Deli.  Where Meg Ryan shows Billy Crystal how she fakes an organism. Then the lady behind her says "I'll have what she's having."  Charlie got a pastrami sandwich, it came first.  Steve reaches over and grabs some pastrami, and it falls apart in his hand.  About to be disappointed, we got the corned beef and it fell apart at the touch. I loved my sandwich but Charlie"s was the best.

That evening we had steak.  A New York classic steakhouse, Smith & Wollensky's.  Where people are treated like family, lots of hugging going on.  The waiters and bartenders wear stars on their pockets, a star for every 10 years of service.  Our waiter had 4 stars proudly displayed on his chest. Drinks are big and cold, great wine list. We started with a shell fish plater.

Order your favorite cut of meat and enjoy.  This restaurant is not for small bites, dieters, or vegetarians. Charlie was the entertainment for the evening.  He mentioned he is a Cowboys fan. These guys are Giants fans. Steve talked about Lawrence Taylor a Carolina guy, who redefined the linebacker position as a Giant. So it was Steve and our weight staff against Charlie.  Charlie did a great job defending his loyalty to his team. And then it was Friday. We walked through Soho on the way to the NoHo /Nolita food tour. Passing the International Culinary Center ( My school) ended up with a 45 minute visit with Chef Guido and the class of 2015. They were departing for Italy the next week and had lots of questions. I felt like a star. We meet our tour guide, Annie, outside The Little Cupcake Bakery. You quickly get a sense she loves her neighborhood and her job.  She talks about the history, architecture, customs and food of the area. We go to 6 different restaurants for 6 tastings. salted caramel filled bombolini at Il Buco Alimenteri; Little Cupcakes "famous blackout cupcake;  wood fired pizza at Emporio (Alex Baldwin rented it out for his wedding). Thomas Edison's lab is now a Australia/ New Zealand restaurant called Public. The "HIP" restaurants are all 'Industrial Chic", Stainless steel, brick, and concrete. Annie ends our tour by singing to us on the streets of New York. Only $40.00 for all that!!!! At 5:00 we check out Public, the Australian/ New Zealand Restaurant for drinks and Kangaroo Carpaccio,  yum. Next onto Peasant, an Italian restaurant, for appetizers in the downstairs wine bar. Great space, cozy and dark, with a cheese and meat tray that would satisfy the lunch crowd at Subway. Upstairs to dinner at our rustic Italian restaurant with a wood fired oven, cool space, and great service. I would recommend the Sucking Pig and the Duck Lasagna. Our Pizza had a small Calabrese Pepper.  It was so hot it took the skin of everyones mouth.  You know the saying, "the smaller the pepper the hotter it is", I am a believer. Our last day starts with a shopping trip to Eataly.  It is a "Food Mall" with small places to eat and everything "Italian".  A great Fritti Misto, cheese and meat tray, and wine, to tide us over until after "Blue Man Group".

Dinner our last night was a unique dining experience. Decoy is a restaurant under a restaurant. It has a large communal table. Not sure if I would like eating like that, but it turned out to be an awesome time. It is known for the best Peking Duck in New York. I have no way to compare but If there is better, I want to go there. The Prix fixe menu for 4 included: 4 small plates, (Katz Pastrami Triangles and Oxtail Dumplings), 2 more main dishes, (Sweet and Sour Shrimp and a perfect steak), sides,( Crab and Scallop Fried Rice and Duck Consommé Shots), and dessert. No one remembers the dessert. We all tried making kielbasa flowers, which were served with the apps. Very poor rendition by everyone. We needed one last drink, REALLY!!! Charlie wanted to know if there was an Irish pub nearby. Our concierge sent us one block away to The Ear Inn. George Washington once owned the place. We ordered Irish coffees and the bartender put a straw in the guys.  Steve took it out, the bartender put it back in and said, "The F------ straw comes with the drink". Steve politely removed it and said, " I don't want the f------ straw."  They were new BFF's.

Final thoughts: You always see things in New York City that make you say, " we are coming back".  Its best if your friends drive, so you can send all your purchases back with them.  Food tours are great, we've never had a bad one. If you want to see a play go to DPAC. Plays mess up the day or night and the theaters are uncomfortable. Remember to take more pictures, because we were bad this trip. Lilia, It was a combined effort. Steve put on paper what he wanted to say and I wrote the blog adding and subtracting from what he wrote. It was a great trip.
